fool's paradise?

I’ve been thinking about travel recently... probably due to future decisions but also from various things I’ve read in the last few weeks on blogs/in books:

Chesterton: “He who travels to be amused, or to get somewhat which he does not carry, travels away from himself, and grows old even in youth among old things... Travelling is a fool's paradise.”

Emerson: “Our first journeys discover to us the indifference of places. At home I dream that at Naples, at Rome, I can be intoxicated with beauty, and lose my sadness. I pack my trunk, embrace my friends, embark on the sea, and at last wake up in Naples, and there beside me is the stern fact, the sad self, unrelenting, identical, that I fled from... But the rage of travelling is a symptom of a deeper unsoundness affecting the whole intellectual action. The intellect is vagabond, and our system of education fosters restlessness. Our minds travel when our bodies are forced to stay at home.”

Andrew Sullivan (who quoted the guys above) puts it this way: “Seeking new superficialities at the expense of familiar depths is a neurosis, not an adventure.

While I understand where these writers are coming from, reading these quotes just goes against everything I thought growing up. Travel is sort of in my blood and my philosophy is usually with Augustine who said: “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page.” I have treasured the opportunity to live overseas and travel some... but I think especially in the first few years I was back in Northern Ireland, I had a sense that people who had never been out of Northern Ireland could never begin to understand me or the world; looking back it probably was me that was being narrow-minded by putting people in boxes. I’ve come to realise it’s more about whether people think about the world/things outside themselves rather than whether or not they’ve travelled. And to be honest, short-term teams and sun holidays often do little to broaden horizons – (although seemingly living somewhere else can make an impact on creativity).

Then I read this yesterday:
I’m sure that some people serve the Lord well as they buzz around the world for six months at a time. And I’m sure some young folks are making a difference for Christ as they float from job to job and place to place. But I’m equally certain that many of these same individuals are actually making self-centred decisions in the name of experience, cultural diversity, and sometimes, I hate to say it, under the guise of short-term missions.... My fear is that of all the choices people face today, the one they rarely consider is, “How can I serve most effectively and fruitfully in the local church?” I wonder if the abundance of opportunities to explore today is doing less to help make well-rounded disciples of Christ and more to help Christians avoid long-term responsibility and have less long-term impact.”
P36 Just do something, Kevin DeYoung

Anyway, food for thought. Don’t think the itchy feet will ever go away but just trying to make a case to myself for the other side of the argument...

life's checkerboard

Just back from Nigeria. Read this prayer this evening which I feel like echoing...

"Thank You that I can safely commit my location and situation to You. I can 'be willing for You to shift me anywhere on life’s checkerboard, or bury me anywhere in life’s garden, gladly yielding myself for You to please Yourself with, anywhere and anyway You choose' (source unknown). Thank You that I can trust You with my future places - ready to go, ready to stay.
So I rest in the fact that You have me in this place for this day, and I praise You that You will faithfully guide me throughout life to just where you want me to be, as I seek to do Your will.

And most important of all is my place in You. How delighted I am to have You as my dwelling place where I can settle down, feel secure and be content anywhere on earth…You are my blessed home, 'where I can enter and be at rest even when all around and above is a sea of trouble' (Andrew Murray). How my soul delights to hide in the secret of Your presence…to take refuge in the shadow of Your wings, to eat at Your table, to drink my fill of the river of Your delights. How blessed I am, my King and my God, for You have chosen me, and brought me near, to live in Your presence, to behold Your delightfulness, to seek Your counsel…And to think that I will dwell in Your house forever!” - Ruth Myers

our kind don't settle?

I'm taking off again in the morning . . . part of me can't wait; part of me was just starting to catch my breath from south africa. Sometimes I don't feel very settled... even though I've technically been in the same place for 6 years now. Maybe it's because some my friends have changed/moved country/moved on and I'm not always 100% settled in my church at the minute. I'm thankful for family that is still around (for now anyway). But, I probably haven't done myself any favours escaping the country for a few months most summers... and this year is no different. One of my friends from high school says, "Settle? Our kind don't settle." Part of me agrees, but part of me thinks it's up to me to make more effort to plant my feet and learn to grow where I'm put...

I guess I'm in over-analysing mode... don't get me wrong, I'm definitely still looking forward to the next month! Lack of internet will probably bring a lull again to this wee venting space, but I shall return... ready to plant those itchy feet (i think...). In the meantime, bring on african thunderstorms, pounded yam, crazy hospital wards, amazing alive worship on a sunday afternoon... oh and that smell (the good nostalgic type) that hits you when you walk off the plane. Who knows, the super eagles might even have a repeat of Olympics 96 while I'm there - just for me... and the other 120million football crazy people!

untravelled world

I am a part of all that I have met;
Yet all experience is an arch wherethrough
Gleams that untravelled world, whose margin fades
For ever and for ever when I move.
How dull it is to pause, to make an end,
To rust unburnished, not to shine in use!
As though to breathe were life....

(a wee bit of Tennyson's Ulysses)

wahey! I'm heading to south africa today :)

back again...

it has been so long since i wrote anything on here… hard to know where to begin again… in some ways feels as if I’ve never been away, but 2 ½ months later… the calendar, my journal and a few pictures prove I was…

it was so good to be home again. not sure how much i want to write about it all. we’ll see. just is still home… loved the hospital, the driving, the smell of nigeria, the thunderstorms, the worship, the time to run, read, reflect on life… the perfect summer in some ways.

now in an office job and back to reality till uni starts… is going ok but good reminder of why I don’t want to be in an office for the rest of my life!

i probably will quote some of the random stuff i read over the summer over next wee while. one quote sticks out…
"had any other condition been better for you than the one in which you find yourself, then divine love would have place you there." –c.h. spurgeon

main events

so, it's been too long. the main events?
1. i'm going to be an aunt before the end of the year... i'm so excited!! i think auntie anna has a ring to it... ;)
2. my sister left the country yesterday for 5 months so i have a very quiet house... :(
3. flights are booked to go home for the summer :)
4. this week brought about an historic moment in this wee country...one of those history book moments. a glimmer of hope and a change of tone. bring it on... :)
5. summer is on it's way with the clocks changing... (even if there was snow a week ago!) :)
6. i have more exams in a few wks... :(

so, goods and bads. but the goods outway the bads.
had lots on my mind this week. hate goodbyes or maybe it is that i dont like change. it always makes me contemplate everything else that's going on a bit more, but i guess that's probably a good thing instead of getting too comfortable with the status quo...

leeds & love...

i'm heading to leeds for a physio conference over the weekend so i'm really hoping that the crazy windy weather we had today has died down. have been on plenty of planes but i prefer big planes rather than these little city hoppers if it's windy!

as it's valentine's weekend, our conference (before we get into the slightly tedious mtg part on sat/sun) is kicking off with a fancy-dress disco and speed-dating... sounds like my idea of a nightmare but i'm determined to join in for the craic! mostly will people i dont know and will probably not see most of them again ever/or until conference next yr.. and everyone will be looking silly; if you're not dressed up will you'll be the one who stands out! my region (ni & scottish uni reps) have decided to go as cartoon characters. hmm.. remains to be seen if i'll post any photos but should be an interesting night all the same :) hopefully picture's will not go down on record as the most professional day of our careers...
for a wee cheesy romantic song for the week... i'm loving declan o'rourke's song 'galileo' today...

your hand in mine

i took a random week long trip to the states over thanksgiving last year. this is one of the songs that has stuck in my head from that trip (which included many hours in a car with an old friend (see right) driving from atlanta, ga to college station, tx!). you know the way a song can evoke a memory? i just love the way it builds up and also i think that having no words somehow makes it more moving or something. it by a band called explosions in the sky and the song is 'your hand in mine'. it's a wee bit long and not fantastic quality but you get the idea :)

drink life to the lees

I cannot rest from travel: I will drink
Life to the lees...

Yet all experience is an arch wherethro'
Gleams that untravell'd world, whose margin fades
For ever and for ever when I move.
How dull it is to pause, to make an end,
To rust unburnish'd, not to shine in use!
As tho' to breathe were life!...

excerpts from Tennyson's Ulysses

i remember the first time i read this poem. there just seemed to be lines/phrases that jumped off the page at me. it was my senior yr of high school, sitting in the classroom with the faint breeze blowing through the room as we dipped into the world of literature...a place that somehow has been forgotten in the midst of my science-based degrees... it was a few months before my class were all about to graduate and scatter across the world.. and the dream of seeing more of the world and experiencing what it had to offer beyond the confines of the strange existence that was our community / bubble seemed both terrifying and intriguing. i longed then as is still do to 'drink/life to the lees'. (defintion of lees: Sediment settling during fermentation, especially in wine; dregs.) it seemed to capture in a fresh way the adage of living life to the full; life in all it's fullness.

Somehow, now that i've been in the same city for the best part of 4 1/2 yrs (with random travel thrown in), i think i view this poem slightly differently. Not that i don't still have itchy feet for new experiences/adventures/travel but i think that it is still possible to strive 'drink/life to the lees' and to not 'rust unburnished' while remaining in one place for a time. is it stretching the essence of this poem to think about it as talking about life being a journey?... and the longing not being too content with how things are.. not to 'rust' in relation to friendships, challenges, seeking to know god more... or maybe tennyson was just talking about ulysees or just about travel (go read all of it sometime). and my interpretation may be just making it say what i want it to... nevertheless, i long for more ambition and passion in life that this poem portrays and as tennyson closes...

To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
